Bow Down Thine Ear, Almighty Lord
"Bow Down Thine Ear, Almighty Lord" was written by Thomas Edward Powell and it was associated to the tune Herr Jesu Christ, Meins, published in As Hymnodus Sacer. The hymn was first published in 1868 in the book The Holy Feast. He subsequently published his Hymns, Anthems, &c, for Public Worship, although the collection was privately printed as an Appendix, Hymn Book for use in his parish of Bisham, Berks. The compilation of the hymns begun in 1855 and has gradually grown to 97 hymns. Thomas’s compiler added 19 hymns including Bow Down Thine Ear, Almighty Lord.
Thomas Edward Powell, M.A. was born on August 22, 1823 at Hampstead, Middlesex. His father was David Powell. Thomas was ordained in 1846 and became the Curate of Cookham-Dean located near Maidenhead. After two years, he was appointed as the Vicar of Bisham. Thomas died on the 8th of February, 1901.
